TORRES, aka Mackenzie Scott, is back with her fourth LP and first with Merge Records. By her “>account, she didn’t dig her time with 4AD. Well now, she’s with one of the best labels around. Here’s her take on the first track.

“Regarding ‘Good Scare,’ I guess I could say that falling in love is a lot like the Superman crawl,” says Scott. “If you’re not familiar with Superman’s crawl, it’s a terrifying maneuver used in spelunking that’s only performed when certain passages are too narrow, so a person has to hold one arm against the body and the other above the head, all while trying to crawl forward. When you fall in love with someone, it’s scary like the Superman’s crawl, but you have no choice but to keep moving forward even though you have no idea what’s ahead of you.”

TORRES announces Three Futures, 9/19/17

by Woody on July 13, 2017

First time I saw TORRES (aka Mackenzie Scott) in concert, I was completely blown away. I tweeted out during the set that she looked like my daughter’s kindergarten teacher. But those looks mask a ferocity in her music that sucks you in during the performance. It makes you forget everything else going around you. She’s moved over to 4AD for the September release. Here’s a little more on the album.

In describing the album, Scott says it “is entirely about using the body that each of us has been given as a mechanism of joy.” The 10 original tracks on Three Futures embrace ecstasy, desire and indulgence rather than self-denial, and exude this idea via immersive music. Mechanized grooves are placed at the forefront, providing a framework for perforated electro-pop static, harsh gothic / industrial textures, and insistent Krautrock motifs.

Torres – Sprinter [album review]

by Woody on May 11, 2015

Dense. That’s the word that comes to mind when I listen to TORRES. After a spin of her latest, Sprinter, I feel like I’ve been hit in the guy with a medicine ball. Her music is powerful, raw and intense. It doesn’t let up for one minute. Its not meant to be listened to casually. You have to let yourself sink into it and let it envelop you.

TORRES is the moniker of Mackenzie Scott, a woman whom I’m tweeted the following about during SXSW, “TORRES looks like my daughter’s 2nd grade teacher but she certainly doesn’t sound liker her.”

Sprinter is the second album by TORRES and her first with Partisan. Strange Hellos starts the album off with a bang. The intro lasts about a minute before Scott kicks into gear with not one thought given to hiding the sheer contempt and hatred she has for this woman Heather. New Skin is the next track and it appears to deal with her Baptist upbringing in Georgia. Her new skin being the new life she’s leading. Its heavy shit as the outro she sings over squealing guitars confirms.

The darkness fears / What Darkness knows
But if you’ve never know the darkness / Then you’re the one who fears the most

Sprinter isn’t the album you play at a dinner party or to wind down after a long day. It demands your attention and you are rewarded if you give it. She’s getting all sorts of praise for this album. make sure to see her live as that you get to see another side of her that doesn’t come across on the album.

TORRES is Mackenzie Scott and she was just added to the excellent Partisan roster. Her follow-up to her 2013 s/t debut will be titled Sprinter and see the light of day on 5/5/15. She’s got a little bit of a fire in the belly and her music is all the better for it. Here’s a snippet on her – Alienation and emerging from darkness are big themes on the record — be it Torres’s place in her family as an adopted child whose mother was also adopted, or her grappling with her Conservative christian southern roots, or her self-imposed outsider status in New York following a recent move from Nashville.

She’ll be at SXSW and I’m sure she’ll be a sought-after show to see.
