The Romany Rye

I first wrote about The Romany Rye back in June of last year and claimed that they filled the void left by Ryan Adams’ hiatus. I’ve since seen the band open for Delta Spirit and was won over once more. They just released a new song called “I Hate Myself (For Loving You)” and it’s not a Joan Jett cover. The song was produced by Kelly Winrich (Delta Spirit) at Matt Costa’s studio in Santa Ana, CA.

You can meet us and them at one of their  SxSW 2011 sets, listed below.

The Romany Rye are one of my favorite discoveries this year. In my Ryan Adams + Cardinals withdrawal, The Romany Rye and Dylan Leblanc are both completing me.

This mp3 was just released for your downloading enjoyment.

the romany rye

The Romany Rye is a philosophical adventure novel written by George Barrows that follows the journey of a learned young man thrown in with a band of gypsies. It’s also the moniker used for singer/songwriter Luke MacMaster’s latest full-band project.‚  Their 8-song debut, Highway 1, Look Back Carefully, is a piece of breezy Americana that falls somewhere between the solo work of Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and Ryan Adams and The Cardinals.

And speaking of Adams, if you’re in a bit of withdrawal from his musical sabbatical, then let The Romany Rye nurse you through the low times. Highway 1 will remind you of Ryan Adams’ alt-country exploits like Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights. It may only be eight tracks deep, but you won’t find a weak spot. “Long Way Down,” “Black Hair,” “All The Boys,” and the My Morning Jacket-inspired “Brother” are standouts.
