I really dug Lionlimb’s 2016 effort, Shoo. It kicked off a new Elliott Smith vibe which is something I can certainly get behind. Now Stewart Bronaugh and Joshua Jaeger are back with their sophomore effort, Tape Recorder, out 2/23 via the fine folks at Bayonet Records. Check out the 6 minute lead track, Maria below.

Tape Recorder is a collection of six tracks written by Bronaugh after Lionlimb’s second European tour in Fall 2016, primarily on piano in Columbia University practice rooms. After having collaborated with a friend who plays cello, Bronaugh began expanding the songs to include violin, cello and bass clarinet. Having been the first time he scored music by hand, Bronaugh looked to ‘70s minimalist composers for research.

Lionlimb – Shoo [album review]

by Woody on March 7, 2016

LL

I played a buddy of mine their lead single, Domino, and his response was, “I dig it. Sounds like a funky Elliott Smith.” That comment really stuck with me and after spending some time with Shoo, its apt for the whole album. This isn’t Parliament style, mind you. it is easy-going with tasty songs grooving with songs being buoyed by varied textures and every tune has a pulsating backbeat that pushes the whole outfit forward.

All the tunes are wonderfully layered together but never to the point that it gets sloppy and crowded. Sort of like a good seven layer dip. And like a good seven layer dip, Shoo is really enjoyable from top to bottom. Just Because is towards the end of the album. It opens with a squealing guitar lick before the organ takes over the tune.

As I mentioned when I posted Domino, Lionlimb is the project of songwriter Stewart Bronaugh and drummer Joshua Jaeger. I’ll say what every other reviewer says, if you dig Elliott Smith gives this a spin.

Lionlimb announce debut album, Shoo. 3/4/16

by Woody on January 20, 2016

LL

Shoo is the debut album from Lionlimb, the project of songwriter Stewart Bronaugh and drummer Joshua Jaeger. It is set for release on March 4th via Bayonet Records. The duo was part of Angel Olsen’s touring band and that gave them instant cred with me. I’d seen Olsen a few times live and her band never left me wanting.

That’s not to say that the tunes below sound anything like Olsen’s music. It is definitely a blend of many styles. Bronaugh referenced Bowie as an influence in a piece on Fader stating, “I don’t know what kind of music we’d be making if David Bowie hadn’t ever put out records.” Good by me. There is a certain quirky, funky sound to it. Its different and good, so I’m excited to listen to more.
