Jess Williamson’s music hits me the hardest as the day sinks into night, the sun gently setting and easing into hiding for a few hours. Williamson’s blending of folk, twang and psych rock washes the day away as her breathy vocals float in the evening as the dusk sky turns to dark.

Smoke is damn good opening track but its the back half of the album where Williamson really finds a groove. How Ya Lonesome is a sweeping cinematic track where Williamson’s vocals seem to hang in the air, kept afloat by gentle keys. Rosaries At The Border is an earthy tune built on on a meditative acoustic riff. The closing track, Gulf of Mexico is stunning and stands among Williamson’s best tracks. Synths are layered into to provide a bottom for the track as Williamson’s vocals bubble up on occasion.

Jess Williamson’s Cosmic Wink snuck up on towards the end of 2018 when it was popping up on some year-end lists. I became infatuated with and then was lucky enough to take in a set at last year’s SXSW. Her latest is set to see the light of day on 5/15 via the fine folks at Mexican Summer. Here’s some info on the track and video via Jess.

“Grief has a way of making the veil between worlds very thin,” says Williamson. “Prior to the memorial service, I was sitting on a porch passing around a guitar and drinking beers with a few very dear people in my life who I look up to greatly and who were very close to the person who had passed. We heard an unexplainable sound in the wind that made us all pause. Like a flute, but more angelic. It kept going. We tried, unsuccessfully, to record it. The sound was indescribably beautiful and heavenly. ‘Were the angels singing just for us, or is that what the wind out here does on tin?’ Regardless of the answer, I know that for that brief moment we were lucky initiates into the mystery realm, and I’m deeply grateful.”
