July Shows We Recommend in Chicago & Atlanta
Well, Taste of Chicago is going full throttle at the beginning of July, and I’m still waiting for someone to tell me something other than how horrible it is. I’ve probably talked to 100 people about Taste of Chicago during my time here, and not one person has good things to say about it. Yet somehow it draws over 3 million people annually. You figure it out. It’s kind of like those survey results you see on the news. They always manage to survey tens of thousands of people, yet somehow I’ve never talked to anyone who has been surveyed. You’d think after 30 years on this earth and seeing thousands of survey results, I or someone I know would have been surveyed by now. They must be surveying the same people who love Taste of Chicago.

Delta Spirit – Ode to Sunshine

I am a busy man. I own my own business, have three kids, a dog and then I moonlight as a writer on HearYa.com. As a result, I sometimes fall very far behind on some of the other websites/blogs that I really enjoy. So one night in December while my wife was at a Christmas party I decided to go back through the ’07 Daytrotter archives to see what I missed.
I was puttering around when I noticed the band Delta Spirit. The write-up sucked me in, so I scrolled down to see what cover tune Delta Spirit may have played (Side note: The National’s “Pretty In Pink” on Daytrotter could be one of my favorite covers of all time). Delta Spirit performed Paul Simon’s “Duncan” and knocked it out of the park. I consider myself to be a fairly big Paul Simon fan and this is his most underrated tune.
I gobbled up the four tracks off of Daytrotter and loved each and every one of them. The next day I downloaded their album, Ode To Sunshine, and I think I have listened to it every day since, including three times in a row after making the purchase.
Ode To Sunshine is a 40 minute soulful, rock and roll experience that fits in just perfectly with other HearYa favorites like Parson Redheads and Dr. Dog. A couple of my favorite tracks include “Trashcan” which has a fantastic piano hook and the slow meandering “House Built For Two” which sounds almost Beatlesque. If you like proper rock and roll that is full of heart, soul, and feeling then I would suggest making this purchase a priority. My only regret is that I discovered them a week too late for our top 50 of ’07. They would have been in my top 15 or 20 for sure.

Feel as Good as a Boner Mix
It’s hard to believe I haven’t written anything since SXSW 2007, otherwise known as the 2007 Bad Hair Convention. It’s been the perfect storm for me – four out of town trips, long hours at the office, and a recent move, all punctuated by some sort of severe case of malaria/scurvy that I’m just getting over. I’m back and ready to rock, though.
I’ve been listening to some good happy music lately, primarily uncovered by Oz and Woody and written about on HearYa over the past few months. I pulled from this music the other night and randomly made a mix CD for a couple friends before heading over for dinner. As I hurried out the door, I pulled out the Sharpie and scribbled “Feel as Good as a Boner” on the face of the disc. I saved the playlist in iTunes and have been listening to it nonstop ever since.
There are two things I like about boners: 1) They are free, and 2) They make you feel pretty good. That’s what the mix I made the other night accomplishes. All the songs are downloadable for free on HearYa, and they’re generally happy songs that are perfect for the nice weather that’s been sweeping through the Midwest.
Without further ado, the “Feel as Good as a Boner” mix for your downloading pleasure.
Lovers Who Uncover – The Little Ones
Forever – The Parson Redheads
This Other City – The Record Low
Mardy Bum – Arctic Monkeys
Sky Blue Sky – Wilco
Crazy for Leaving – Catfish Haven
Energy – The Apples in Stereo
Another Sunny Day – Belle and Sebastian
While You Were Sleeping – Elvis Perkins (my new favorite song)
With the Lord – The Morning Pages
Everytime I Make a Girl Cry I’ve Done My Job – Band Marino
Technology – The Whigs

The Parson Red Heads – King Giraffe

If you like The Magic Numbers and all their harmonizing but wished they rocked just a bit harder, then I have the band for you – The Parson Red Heads. Apparently everybody in Parsons Redheads is related or grew up with each other. If you check their MySpace page, they all have the Parson stage name and for all I know they wear black Nikes and purple shrouds, and you know what? I could care less. This is a phenomenal album that really showcases the California folk scene.
Evan Way is the lead Parson and has a wonderful voice that would fit in well on any 60′s compilation. Surrounded by the 4 piece harmonies and fantastic backing band, it will have you thinking of Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Byrds and other 60′s psychedelic folk acts. With each spin I find little nuances that make me enjoy it more than the previous listen.
For me, the best song on the disc is hands down, “Forever.” Other stand-out tracks include “Full Moon,” “Mossback” & “Punctual As Usual.”
Fire them up and let the warm, soulful sounds put a smile on your face.
