One Track at a Time: Architecture in Helsinki - Heart It Races
1 Comment Published by Kevin March 19th, 2008 in MP3's, One Track at a Time.A few weeks ago we went through a phase where we mentioned Amy Winehouse like seven times. Okay. That might be a bit of an exaggeration, but with all the attention it got, it certainly felt like it. Regardless of Oz’s feelings toward her and her hygiene (or lack-thereof) it did give us an […]
One Track at a Time: Justin Townes Earle - Hard Livin’
1 Comment Published by Kevin March 10th, 2008 in MP3's, One Track at a Time, SXSW 2008.Phew! It’s been a while since our last One Track at a Time. SXSW 2008 has been dominating HearYa recently, and rightly so. Therefore, in honor of SXSW and our upcoming Bloodshot Records day party, this OTaaT will give you yet another reason to check it out. In addition to Session alum […]
Considering it was Ben Folds Five’s second release, Whatever and Ever Amen (specifically “One Angry Dwarf”), that caused my musical epiphany as a child, it’s not surprising that I’ve fallen for The Bad Plus. Their similar set up (piano, bass, drums) may be the first indication of their similarities, but what caught my ear […]
Elliott BROOD - SXSW 2008, New Album Coming
3 Comments Published by Kevin February 18th, 2008 in MP3's, SXSW 2008.Prefixes are fun. Everyone loves throwing out a “faux-” or “contra-” occasionally. They’re even more fun in music when some critic, quick to over classify new music, slap on 3 or 4 before “rock.” I never know what to expect when some band’s sound is described as “neo-soul-indie-alt-rock.” Yet when a […]
HearYa Session 13: The Poison Control Center
4 Comments Published by Kevin February 12th, 2008 in MP3's, HearYa Sessions. After months of advertising, national attention, and millions of dollars spent, the blitz known as the Iowa caucus occurred. As a native of Iowa myself, I’ve long enjoyed the political spotlight we receive once every 4 years. While NY, DC, and other areas are always reminded of their “importance,” Iowa chugs along quietly feeding […]
Every list is subjective, and while these are probably not the “best” 5 songs of the year, they continuously found their way into my playlist in 2007. Some of them made our Top 50 Albums of 2007 and some didn’t, but all are awesome. In no particular order, here are my Top 5 Songs […]
One Track at a Time - Aesop Rock (f. John Darnielle) - Coffee
1 Comment Published by Kevin December 27th, 2007 in MP3's, One Track at a Time.Despite my Iowa upbringing and lanky, pale stature, I believe I’m the unofficial rap writer at HearYa. There’s something about a well produced beat and some clever lyrics that get me going, and I have absolutely no problem making that known. And while you won’t ever catch me doing the Solja Boi, I do […]

The Snake The Cross The Crown is one of those bands that I’ve been listening to for nearly the entire year, yet haven’t written a single word about them. The same thing happened to The Broken West. Regardless, I included tStCtC on my Best of 2007 list, so its only fair I say a few words.
When I first got the disc, I had planned an entire full review: a catchy intro paragraph somehow relating my personal life to the music, another paragraph for history and background of the band, maybe two short ones concerning the actual music touching briefly on my favorite tracks, and finally, a conclusion that somehow tied it all together. However, I’m lazy, it’s late, and who really wants to read that? So here goes….
alt country / appropriate lazy diction / the songs build / catchy / two of them are brothers
See how much time that saved us? Now for the tunes.

So, as it turns out, writing for a website is exceedingly difficult without access to the internet. Over the past few days I’ve been unable to connect to the wifi provided by my lovely upstairs neighbor “Mallory.” Whether this is because she actually found out I was “borrowing” it or its actually broken, […]
One Track at a Time - Glen Hansard “Say It To Me Now”
2 Comments Published by Kevin November 9th, 2007 in Music Video, MP3's, One Track at a Time. No, I’ve not yet seen the movie Once. I will get to it someday, but I cannot stop listening to the soundtrack given to me by a friend a few weeks ago. There is just something about Glen Hansard’s voice. He took time off from fronting The Frames to film Once, where […]
