Kiwi Jr – Football Money (album review)

by Woody on March 18, 2020

Kiwi Jr. hails from Toronto and released an album that immediately will you remind you of Pavement in all the good ways. But upon repeated spins in anticipation of seeing them in Austin, I was reminded of one of favorite bands of the oughts – Sam Champion and one of my current favorites Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.

Over the course of the album you feel like you’re hanging with the quirky smart guys in a your hometown as they make pointed and funny observations about the nonsensical of it all; often mixing it in with pop culture references. On Swimming Pool, one of my favorites – the boys sound like a band from the 60s which works in well as the band sings the name of Brian Jones. Gimme More is a ripping tune, sounds like Malkmus guest singing on a Strokes track.

I’ve been listening to this album on repeat for two months. Gutted that I’m not seeing them in Austin.
