Hiss Golden Messenger – Terms of Surrender (album review)

Albums by Hiss Golden Messenger are balm for my soul. There is something about the music of M.C. Taylor that rights my wrongs unlike anything else out there. The music. The lyrics. It is just so genuine that I feel that he’s singing to me and me alone.

At a time where the world is spinning into oblivion, HGM’s new album is a beacon in the middle of that storm. It stresses love, hope and family to help with the constant fight to make our lives and the lives around us better. The lead single (and video), I Need a Teacher is as good as it gets. Buoyed by the backing vocals of Jenny Lewis, the song gives you goosebumps and makes you want to be a better person.

Happy Birthday Baby is a love letter from Taylor to his daughter that any parent could and should want to sing to their kids as they get older; part apology for what you did wrong / part celebration for what they’ve become. Whip is a stone cold bluesy jam in the spirit of Little Feat’s weirder stuff. That is followed by the sparse and tender title track; a perfect way to close down this beautiful album. He really pours it out on this one.

Taylor has done it again. When this album was announced, I went down a wormhole and was listening to his stuff non-stop. It’s a good place to be and will be even better the next time now that Terms of Surrender will be added to the equation.
