NO WIN – downey (album review)

by Woody on March 25, 2019

A lot of times at SXSW, I’ll go see a band or artist on the strength of one songs. Been some hits or misses along the way. Danny Nogueiras’ outfit certainly outkicked the coverage and had me looking forward to their full debut.

I’ve described NO WIN as indie-punk, power-pop, pop-punk, etc. but in reality it is simply a really good rock and roll album; one that Nogueiras poured his heart and soul into – including building his own studio. “I worked to the bone on this record,” says Nogueiras, “I make this kind of music because I love it genuinely, and I want as many people as possible to enjoy it.”

Well this person enjoys it from beginning to end. The opener, After Your Legs is an inch-perfect 2:20 of power pop to get things going. A few songs later is another gem in Vision; a coming of age track about the end of relationship. Shelley Duvall is another piece of power pop bliss that comes right before Being Teen gives a wistful look back at the past; at least for this old SOB.

Every aspect of this album is well done. Nogueiras busted his ass to make this album a reality and the payoff is well worth it.
