Pkew Pkew Pkew – Optimal Lifestyles (album review)

by Woody on March 6, 2019

As I creep towards to the age of 50; the reality is that I am fairly removed from the subjects that Toronto’s punk outfit Pkew Pkew Pkew sing of on Optimal Lifestyles. I still pick and choose my moments; the opener Still Hangin’ Out After All These Years hits home as I head to SXSW with friends I’ve had for 25 years.

But soon enough this will be the music of my kids. While + One was an ode to your early 20s with odes to drinking before you go out, ordering pizza, nursing hangover and generally hangin’ out. But as time waits for no man, Optimal Lifestyles mixes these subjects while coming of age; and they do it well. Adult Party dredged up memories of the first dinner party we hosted (I made risotto and it slayed) and left a wry smile on my face. Passed Out and I Don’t Matter At All are great tracks that really capture what I consider to be the essence of the album; we’re having a great fucking time but what are really doing.

I have been playing the shit out of this album while I drive my kids around. Most of it is lost on them but I love how their music slides into that grey area between our stations in life. I really hope as they get older, that they find themselves at a show by Pkew Pkew Pkew singing themselves hoarse. Cause that’s what their old man will be doing in Austin next week.
