Claire Morales – All That Wanting (album review)

by Woody on July 9, 2018

If I could describe the sophomore effort of Claire Morales in one word, it would be raw energy (I’ve never been good at following directions). There is a palpable energy that permeates throughout the album. Even a slower track like Sybille, an ode to German folk legend Sybille Baier, with its pedal steel has the feeling like she’s trying to put a lid on her powerful voice, only for it to seep out into the open despite her best efforts.

The track that immediately follows Sybille is No Telling, a mid-temp fuzzy track about the genesis of a summer crush. She really nails the vocals on this one as well before the tune builds to a frenetic close. Diana I & Diana II are a nice one-two punch about a heroine’s journey towards redemption. Love the way the tunes build upon each other. And Wildest Dreams on the back end is another track not to be missed.

This is simply a wonderfully executed album. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention her band as they fucking deliver on every track – Alex Hastings (guitar), Ryan Williams (bass) and Russ Connell (drums). Got a feeling that her name will be known by quite a few more people by the end of 2018.
