Some nights as bang through the emails, I’ll check the name and guess what type of music it will be without reading the text. It helps keep things fresh in my old age. As I hit play for Juan de Fuca, I would have never guessed what would come out of the speaker. The sounds was reminiscent of the early sounds of The Walkmen; and those sounds make my ears happy.

Juan de Fuca is a tectonic plate. Juan de Fuca was a Spanish Explorer of Greek descent. But who is Juan de Fuca as it relates to music? Well Juan de Fuca started as the solo project of Jack Cherry in Athens, GA. He then rounded a band into a quintet and began to move the project further eventually recording with Drew Vandenberg.

Their debut is a real good listen. The construct of the album is really well done. At various times, Cherry’s vocals soar above the music, seem to get lost in the guitars or just get tangled in them altogether. These guys are going to be at SXSW and I’ll really looking forward to taking in a set.
