Pearl Jam – Lightning Bolt [sort of an album review]

by Woody on December 5, 2013

The best musical experience of my 2013 was when I saw Pearl Jam at Wrigley with my wife. My wife’s sister hooked us up with great tickets at the last minute and off we went. The show started off well enough but was soon detoured by a 2.5 hour rain delay that found us, in of all places, the Cubs locker room drinking beer. I waited out the storm sitting in the Cubs dugout and wondering if the Cubs were going to finalize the Matt Garza trade. The show resumed at 11:30 and they played right up until 2AM. Thanks to my mother-in-law who relieved our teenaged babysitter, my wife and I were able to stick it out until the end. I’ll never forget when they tore into Porch at 1:45.

As for Lightning Bolt, it is a good album; but far from a great album. I don’t think it is as good as The Avocado album or Backspacer but it doesn’t harm the legacy. There are some good tracks on there and the songs they played live sounded good that night. Would it be the first album I would reach for in the PJ catalog? Nope. But it is a solid listen made better by the memories from Wrigley.

Saw them in Hartford. It’s not my favorite album either, but there are enough good tracks on it to make it worthwhile, several of which are way better performed live. Pearl Jam can still rock, and they put on an awesome show. They will always be one of my all-time favorites.
