Pickwick, Live Session #115

We first experienced Pickwick at Antone’s in Austin back in 2012 at SXSW. They took the stage with a short sound check and Galen Disston started singing as the first notes of the piano rang out. It reminded me of a boxing match where the underdog rushes at his opponent trying to gain an unfair advantage with the element of surprise.

Perhaps underdog is the wrong word to describe Galen, but I’m sure plenty of folks unfamiliar with Pickwick at SXSW rushed to judgement on Galen based on appearances. He’s got an the amazing head of Bob Dylan hair paired with smart glasses that look more functional that stylistic. He looked very approachable – possibly a little shy. He was wearing jeans and a tee shirt. I remember thinking that he would look more at home in Silicon Valley designing software than on stage performing.

Then Galen started singing and misconceptions melted away. His voice is pure silk and effortless as he hits a range of notes. He belted out lyrics to songs infused with blues, R&B, soul and pop and the crowd became enthralled. The rest of Pickwick supports Galen with gritty, vintage keys and a pounding rhythm section reminiscent of early Cold War Kids. “Hacienda Motel” was the single that we first fell in love with, but diving into Can’t Talk The Medicine reveals a full body of work that demands attention. You’ll get a taste of what they can do in this session, but find the album and catch a show. They’ll be on tour through October. Be sure to check them out.

The link for the download zip is not working. Have been waiting impatiently for this session.

Many thanks for introducing me to great music. Had overlooked Jason Isbell until HearYa’s review of his last album – had a listen and had to buy it. The Deep Dark Woods sessions are my favorite. Hope there will be a third!!!!!!!
