Denver – s/t debut [album review]

by Woody on December 3, 2012

Did we somehow forget to review this excellent album? Yes. Were we reminded about it because of an awesome video that paid tribute to one of the greatest movies of all time – Roadhouse? Yes. Does that video paint an accurate portrayal of their music? Yes, yes it does.

Denver is a twang outfit out of Portland featuring members of Alela Diane’s band and members of Blitzen Trapper. Their particular brand of twang harkens back to days before TV shows were proclaiming the next country star or had a show called Nashville. This is meat and potatoes twang – no frills but leaving you oh so satisfied.

The Way It Is, featured in the video, is your classic country-western breakup tune. Ballroom Slip-cut is a twangy bootscootin’ number laced with banjo and steel. As we’ve said before, its always fun when a band breaks down some new walls and makes you take notice. Its equally as pleasing when a band harkens back to a simpler time and does it impeccably. Denver is the latter and we’re digging it.
