Strand of Oaks releases Maureen’s from Dark Shores [new mp3]

Timothy Showalter, aka Strand of Oaks, has become a friend of HearYa. He’s performed two incredible live sessions with us (here and here)and we’ve seen him at many a show, including a few trips at SxSW. It was this year’s trip to Austin when I last bumped into Tim. We knew he was fresh off of a trip to San Francisco where he recorded his new album with John Vanderslice, so we were eager to hear some of the new Strand of Oaks material.

I remember walking into Home Slice Pizza in the early afternoon and it was hot. I grabbed a beer to replenish the hangover that was leaking out of my pores then proceeded to find Woody for this actual conversation:

Me: Have you seen Tim yet?
Woody: Nope.
Me: $10 says he gives us the best hug of the week. I have to pee. I’ll be right back.

I walked over to the portable toilet and waited in line. Someone entered in line behind me and it was Timothy Showalter. I turned and said hello and he gave me the best hug of the week. I then looked at Tim’s appearance: Tee shirt under flannel shirt. Jeans. Combat boots. Long hair. Lush beard. It had to be 101 degrees and he wasn’t even breaking a sweat. And he just finished a cup of coffee. I was wearing shorts, a tee shirt and running shoes and suddenly felt like the biggest dork on the planet.

Tim went on to tell me about his grandfather who would work on his roof in the middle of summer wearing long underwear and how hot drinks raise your body temperature and allow you to cope in warmer climates…or something. It was one of those conversations that only exists in lines at portable toilets at SxSW.

Anyway, Tim put on one of my favorite sets of the week. His new stuff from the upcoming album Dark Shores is going to blow your hair back. He’s stretching his legs from his past albums to turn out a rocker – one that he described as Beatles meets Springsteen, with a bunch of three minute tunes.  No news on when the album will be released, but we’ll keep you posted. Here’s the first track released called “Maureen’s,” available for download.

Here are the lyrics and tour dates:

And it came, Like they warned
A fog rolled, On thousands of homes
All at once I thought of you, Wasted time

I wonder, Where you live now
Did you find, The highest ground
The clean air will keep you breathing
My luck here, Keeps changing

Your parents, They never left
There’s nothing, familiar here now
I go back, To check for signs
Remember Maureen’s, In the summertime

Everything you know is wasted
Nothing left to go back for now
Doesn’t mean you need
To give up so soon on me

I’ll find, An endless spring
Where clouds give way, To newborn suns
I will find you, waiting there
Bathed in light, And out of reach
