R.I.P. Levon Helm, Drive-By Truckers + Megafaun Tribute

by Woody on April 20, 2012

Levon Helm was an American treasure. He was adored and loved by anybody that came in contact with him. A friend of mine from college described an evening that he met Levon and the other true members of The Band.

I did see the Band while up at college in a small club in Albany in early 1986 about a week before Richard Manuel hanged himself.

While Robbie was gone from the band they still had the original 4 members. Some friends and I bought them a pitcher of beer and they responded by buying us 3 or 4. I remember being no more than 5 feet from Danko and Levon and just requesting song after song of which they played. Truly a great memory of

Twitter and Facebook has lit up with testaments to Levon and what he meant to so many of today’s best musicians. But my favorite belongs to J. Roddy who simply said, “I blame Robbie Robertson.”

Two of HearYa’s favorite bands – DBT & Megafaun- combined to pay tribute to Levon last night. Here is that video.
