SXSW – Under The Radar Bands

by Woody on March 12, 2012

While it is always fun to chase the latest buzz band and/or catch one of your favorites down at SXSW, the best part is always finding some new band. So here are some bands flying under the radar that will make it worth your while.

The Preservation
– A five piece based out of Austin. They were recommended to us by Muzzle of Bees’, Ryan Matteson. If you fancy yourself a fan of Dr. Dog, then check them out this week.

3/12: 5:30 – Cosmic Charlies
3/13: 7:00 – White Horse Saloon
3/14: 12:45AM – Co-Op House Party (French House)
3/15: 7PM – Stephen F. Austin Hotel
3/16: TBA – Six Lounge
3/17: 4:00 – Lucy’s Fried Chicken
3/17: 10PM – Hole In The Wall

Field Report
– The creation of Chris Porterfield from Wisco. He played some guys you might know in a band called DeYarmond Edison – Justin Vernon & Megafaun. If that doesn’t get you excited, how ’bout this? The one song I heard was awesome. Go see them and tell everybody you are cool.

Thursday 3/15/12 –
3:00pm Stem & Leaf @ Papi Tino’s (1306 E. 6th Street)
7:00pm do512 Lounge Sessions (2208 South Lamar)

Friday 3/16/12 –
12:45pm Pandora showcase @ Antone’s (213 West 5th Street)
6:00pm Treehouse Party @ Cheers (416 6th Street)
7:30pm Official Showcase @ Central Presb. Church (200 E 8th St)

Saturday 3/17/12 –
12:00pm Brooklyn Vegan Showcase @ Hotel Vegas (500 E.6th)
3:30pm Outlaw Roadshow @ Rusty Spurs (405 E. 7th Street)

Night Moves – They sound nothing like Seger and are touring with Caveman, which is a nice fit. Their PR email called them cosmic groovers – sure let’s call them that.

Austin, TX Brew Exchange at 4:30pm (706 W 6th St)
Buca Lounge at 8pm (422 Congress Ave) Official Showcase
Austin, TX Swan Dive at 1:15pm (651 Red River St) First Ave Showcase
Dogwood Bar at 3pm (715 W 6th St)
Austin, TX The Liberty at 6:25pm (1618 East 6th St)

Greylag – Portland, Oregon’s Greylag is Andrew Stonestreet and Daniel Dixon. The duo shies away from drawing comparisons to other artists but name-checks the likes of Wilco, Feist and Grizzly Bear as inspirations (they’re all pretty good). They will perform at Sasquatch in May, just after their debut EP “The Only Way to Kill You” drops.

THURSDAY 3.15 Rusty’s (Outdoor Stage) Sideways Media Presents 405 E. 7th St. 5PM
SATURDAY 3.17 Clive Bar 609 Davis St. 9PM
