Adam Arcuragi and The Lupine Chorale Society – Like A Fire That Consumer All Before It …

Some people want NPR to go away because they are wasting our tax dollars. But after discovering Adam Arcuragi on NPR’s site, I’m going to say my tax dollars are being put to good use. Arcuragi and the LCS (I am never typing the full name again) sound like you put Langhorne Slim, 16 Horsepower and The Head and The Heart in a blender, and not just one of those pussy speeds, the high powered one where you make smoothies.

AA & The LCS sound like a traveling tent revival act. At some points, dark and foreboding. At others revelatory and full of life. I read in an interview with Huffington Post, that they are labeled as Death Gospel. That is perfect and his response was excellent – “I think it is an appropriate label. Death Gospel is anything that sees the inevitability of death as a reason to celebrate all the special wonder that is being alive and sentient. That’s the hope with the songs, and how we would like for them to come across, that thing in all life that is fine and good.”

On The President Song, Arcuragi channels David Eugene Edwards as he leads The LCS through a powerful chugging tune that will certain be a live favorite. The picking of the banjo lightens up Arcuragi’s deep powerful and the LCS provides the perfect amount of backing vocals.

Port Song slows the pace down and lets his voice stand on its own. There is the requisite acoustic guitar to give the tune some direction. Slowly building as the rest band joins in without really being noticed other than the fiddle. And while you know there is going to be a big finish, it definitely delivers.

I also downloaded his previous effort, I Am Become Joy, and have been loving that one as well. They’re going to be down at SxSW this year and I for one plan on taking in a set. I have a feeling they are going to be a shit-ton of fun live.
