Is 2011 2008 redux?

by Woody on August 16, 2011

The weather is absolutely glorious in New York today. It poured rain earlier this week and the parks are bursting with green hues. The humidity has dropped and there is a slight breeze coming up off the rivers and flowing through the streets. There’s not a cloud in the sky.

It’s been a while since I’ve written a post for HearYa and I wanted to list a few of my favorite bands of summer 2011, and talk about a trend I’ve noticed.

So, the major trend I’ve noticed in 2011 is: 2008 redux.  So far this year we’ve gotten releases from the likes of Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Lykke Li, and Adele (I’m sure I’m missing a ton of other examples) – all of whom had stellar 2008 albums. 2008 keeps popping into my mind – with its BlackCabSessions, La Blogotheque videos of Paris flats, beards and flannels, etc. I mean, it’s not too surprising. These cycles occur all the time in music. That said, it’s been fun seeing how these bands have evolved. Lykke’s gone more brash and electronic, Bon Iver more hallucinogenic, Fleet Foxes pretty much double-downed, and for Adele – well, let’s just say she entered hyperspace.

So, here’s some of the music I’ve been enjoying this summer:

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.
Beach Fossils
The Deep Dark Woods (their new album is phenomenal)
Hospital Ships
Papercuts

Enjoy the rest of summer!
