Trampled By Turtles, Live Session #90

by oz on June 28, 2011

Trampled By Turtles are my kind of Bluegrass band. They don’t have that clean, crisp Nashville sound you may think of when you think “Bluegrass music.” Instead, they embrace a looser sound that blends rock and punk into their twang.

TxT hails from Duluth, MN and have quietly released five albums, the latest of which is one of my personal favorites of last year. Palomino is a brilliant record that balances furious energy, calming ballads, frantic finger-picking, three-part harmonies, and startlingly good songwriting. Three of the four songs in this session, Victory, Help You, and New Orleans, can be found on Palomino. The heartbreaking ballad entitled Widower’s Heart is a new and unreleased track whose title requires little explanation on its subject matter.

I’ve seen them twice at SxSW in two consecutive years and they were in my top three sets each year. Dave Simonett (guitar/vocals), Ryan Young (fiddle), Erik Berry (mandolin/vocals), Dave Carroll (banjo, vocals), and Tim Saxhaug (bass/vocals) each command their instruments and demand equal attention from the audience. I was chatting with an old friend before they took the stage at HomeSlice Pizza last year in Austin and halfway into their first song, we ended our conversation mid-sentence and didn’t take our eyes off the stage until the set concluded. “Good” is an understatement.

Trampled By Turtles have a few tour dates left this summer, so catch up with them if you can. No matter how hot it is, there’s a very good chance that Erik Berry will be wearing overalls, a cowboy hat, and full beard.

White Denim have another new video for the tune “Street Joy.” Apparently, they have dug up some footage from my prom in 1988 when I rocked a purple cumberbund/bowtie and a mullet. Oddly, I didn’t get any loving that night.

Anywho, D is one of the finer albums you will hear in 2011. The boys from Austin will be at Schubas for a sold out show on Thursday of this week. I’m thinking about dusting off the old tux for the occasion. If you’d like to get a pair of free tickets to join me, email us with your full name at freeshit@hearya.com.

Off to Ha Ha Tonka for Vacation

by oz on June 23, 2011

The family and I head to Lake of the Ozarks each year and that time has come. Not too far from my parents’ lake house is a Missouri State Park called Ha Ha Tonka, which inspired the name of the band Ha Ha Tonka.

The fellas recently released a new video for “Usual Suspects.” Seemed appropriate to share while I go offline for a bit. Warning for our younger readers: Don’t drink booze on railroad tracks. There’s very little upside.

A few weeks back, Shirk and I were talking about the logistics of a potential Centro-matic live session. Unfortunately schedules didn’t work out, but Shirk asked me to describe them. I said the session would similar to The Mother Hips. Like Tim Bluhm and Greg Loicano, I imagine Will Johnson to be the quintessential pro that would just lead his band in for a cracking session – everything nailed on the first take. And like The Hips, Centro-matic has managed to become one of America’s most under-appreciated bands, flying under the radar as they continually produce some of the best music around under the names Centr-matic and South San Gabriel.

Candidate Waltz is not Centro-matic’s first album, but it sure does sound that way. The album’s sound is fresh and full of energy. They sound hungry and the album is no shrinking violet as it comes banging out of your speaker. Johnson has this to say on their site:

I’d just hate for people to say, ‘It’s the same ol’ Centro-matic record.’ Do we go back and do the old things that please everyone, or go in the direction that challenges us and scares us? Because that’s where you learn things about your craft.

“All The Talkers” is phenomenal, painting a scene at a club where the band fights through all the bullshit-hipsters, talkers and posers to win over the crowd. Johnson paints the scene like this:

Talkers’ is an attempt to tell a story. As rock fans we’ve all witnessed it, and I love seeing it happen—when an unexpected comes through town and blows the doors off the joint.

The outro for this song is great as Johnson fades off singing, “It was not like the night before.”

Johnson further describes Candidate Waltz as the band’s “meat-and-potatoes pop record.” I’ll describe it as infectious, addicting and just plain ol’ fantastic. They are playing at Schubas in Chicago on July 3rd and – take it from me – Centro-matic is a real treat to see live.

Young Buffalo – Young Von Prettylips [Album Review]

June 20, 2011

I liked Young Buffalo plenty after hearing their first single, “Catapilah,” back in March. Then I liked them plenty more after seeing them at SxSW. But after seeing the name of their debut EP…well now things are getting weird. Young Von Prettylips will undoubtedly be the name of my next fantasy football team. The music, [...]

June 17, 2011

Father’s Day is a mere 2 days away, so if you haven’t purchased a gift that reminds your father of the stress in his life (i.e. some sort of organizer, business casual apparel, and/or a yard tool), better get on that. It’s tradition. We’ve got a special Father’s Day treat for you today – something [...]

Other Lives in other worlds, For 12 [New Video]

June 15, 2011

One of our most favoritist albums of 2011 is Tamer Animals by Other Lives. Our live session producer, Steve Shirk, cuddles with the record on a regular basis and had great things to say about it. The band just released a video for their first single, “For 12.” I wasn’t expecting a spaceship from an [...]

Johnny Cash and Bobby Bare cover Shel Silverstein [Under the Covers]

June 14, 2011

I have very fond memories of Shel Silverstein in my early years. I remember my parents reading me poems from Where The Sidewalk Ends and A Light In The Attic before I could read and I recall pouring over these pages as I learned to read. Some of my earliest memories. What many don’t know [...]

The Moondoggies, Live Session #89

June 12, 2011

I first met The Moondoggies at Slims in San Francisco back in 2008. They made a trip down from their hometown of Seattle to play a few select dates in Northern California. I was a huge fan of their debut album, Don’t Be A Stranger, at the time and asked them if they had any [...]

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks can predict who wants bjs.

June 10, 2011

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks are set to release a new album called Mirror Traffic (produced by Beck) on August 23rd. The politically charged”Senator” is the first single, featuring warm lyrics: I know what the senator wants, what the Senator wants, is a blow job. I know what you’re thinking: “This particular want is not [...]
