Akron/Family to release new album on cassette tape. [New MP3]

by That Guy on January 10, 2011

Akron/Family are set to release their next album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT on February 8th, and they’ll release 500 copies on cassette tape. Luckily, when you buy the cassette, you’ll also get a link to download the album in MP3 format. I still don’t understand this new ironic cassette tape trend that’s happening, but I am impressed by the single Akron/Family has released from the new album. Equally impressive is the accompanying video. Both are provided below for your enjoyment.

Yeah…the cassette release revival seems a bit kitsch. While “tape” has it’s sound that gives many of us the warm fuzzies remembering our youth… it’s kind of a short drive down memory lane because the cassette tape is a pretty flawed format. The other day I did a transfer (to digital) of a mixtape my sister gave me before she left for college in 1990. While it was fun hearing those songs again, the wobbly-ness and narrow bandwidth of the cassette audio left me glorifying the first CD player my Dad bought.

On the flipside, if the band is releasing these cassettes to help take you back to an aural era, there might not be a better tool than the cassette. The only trick is finding a working cassette player.

That being said, I like “So It Goes”.

Kinda crazy that a Safeway logo mysteriously appears in the video and we just had that shooting in AZ…

I’d like to think Kurt Vonnegut would have enjoyed this song, I know I did.
