December 2010

Happy New Year y’all! We recorded a live session with The Deep Dark Woods back in September and Shirk is putting the finishing touches on the mixes. Unlike our previous session with The Deep Dark Woods, this one features only cover songs.

I’m still on vacation, but here’s a sneak peak of the Canadians performing The Grateful Dead’s “Peggy-O” in our soon to be posted session. We couldn’t wait to share.

Joe Pug and Joe Purdy each have free albums to give away for the holidays. Pug, in conjunction with XRT, is offering his 2007 debut Nation of Heat EP (also available via the widget below).  It’s my favorite debut album of the past three years. Maybe more.

Joe Purdy is giving away all 15 tracks from his latest LP This American until the end of December. You can download it via his website and sample below.

One of my all-time favorite songs was featured in a Subaru commercial called “Hockey Mom.” The Pogues song “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” is the title track from their phenomenal 1988 album.

Here’s a real video:

Congratulations and Happy Holidays to these five readers for winning the Pioneer DJ-Inspired Headphones! They’ll go out in the mail right after the holidays. These were also selected at random, so it’s purely coincidental that four of the five names begin with ‘J.’

Best Albums 2010 [Picks 1-10]

December 20, 2010

And finally, our top 10 albums of 2010. It should come as no surprise to our long time readers that The Black Keys pulled in the #1 spot. Theyve been my favorite band for years and years and Brothers finds the duo pushing their boundaries in production, sound, and style. Local Natives are a band [...]

Best Albums of 2010 [Picks 11-20]

December 19, 2010

Long-time favorites Drive-By Truckers, Josh Ritter and Spoon all released tremendous albums in 2010. DBT in particular showed a nice return to form which will continue with their soon-to-be-released Go-Go Boots. Trampled By Turtles and Futurebirds floored us at SxSW and Palomino and Hampton’s Lullaby lived up to every one of our expectations. We also [...]

Best Albums of 2010 [Picks 21-30]

December 17, 2010

We had a few other surprises in 2010. The first was Blitzen Trapper’s foray into prog/glam Rock that was controversial to some, but glorious to us. The next was an amazing Americana debut from 19 year old, but wise beyond his years, Dylan Leblanc. I’m still spinning Paupers Field on a regular basis and his [...]

Best Albums of 2010 [Picks 31-40]

December 16, 2010

In our second installment of best albums of the year, we included two folk favorites that were never reviewed on HearYa in Ben Solle & Daniel Martin Moore’s collaborative folk album, Dear Companion, and Ray LaMontagne and The Pariah Dogs’ God Willin’ and The Creek Don’t Rise. Beach House released the best album I never [...]

Best Albums of 2010 [Picks 41-50]

December 15, 2010

2010 was a strong year for music and we battled fiercely to create our list of best albums of the year. Unfortunately, we had to leave out several albums that struck a chord with us individually, in the spirit of compromise. In our first 10, you’ll see four full-length debuts: The Wilderness of Manitoba, Chief, [...]

The Low Anthem release Ghost Woman Blues [new mp3, video]

December 13, 2010

The Low Anthem will release their new album, Smart Flesh, on February 22nd. I’ve been listening for a few weeks and love it. There’s a track called “Boeing 737″ that’ll knock your socks off. You can see a new video of their first single, “Ghost Woman Blues,” below or download an mp3 of the song [...]
