Ezra Furman & The Harpoons [Artist Review]

by That Guy on November 11, 2010

Dont you hate it when music bloggers describe artists by comparing them to other artists? Its such a cop-out. Since Im not that good of a blogger, Im going to go ahead and rock out with my cop out.

Id describe Ezra Furman as two parts Gordon Gano from the Violent Femmes,  one part Conor Oberst, and one part Ben Kweller stirred up with one of those crazy straws with all of the loops in it and chased with a shot of 5-Hour Energy.

We were supposed to do a live session with Ezra a long time ago, and for whatever reason it didnt work out. But Ive been listening to him since then and I must say I really enjoy his music. His voice isnt exactly Martin Sexton-quality, but he sings with a lot of energy and writes quirky, creative songs that are fun to listen to. Theyre full of twists and turns, and a crapload of words that dont necessarily always line up with the music. His songs would be the hardest in the world to karaoke.

But what really sold me was his Kirsten Dunst song, and the video of him playing it on the YouTubes. Its hilarious and brilliant at the same time.

Ezra Furman is an original talent. He doesnt have a new album or anything , I just thought you should know about him.

I could tell you exactly why we didn’t do a session with Ezra a few years ago….but I won’t because I’m polite.

Saw him play at the Red Moon Festival (J.O.E) over labor day this year. In addition to being drunk and stumbling around on stage like a fool, he kept talking about how drunk he was and why it was cool because he was a rock n roll guy or something like that. It was like watching some 8th grader shotgun his first 6pack of Natty Light and then tell you why drinking rules. C’mon dude….

I had no idea anyone knew about Ezra and The Harpoons. Thanks for posting this. I feel like wearing sunglasses now.

Hey Shirk – don’t be polite…you can tell why. And what are these sessions of which you speak? Did Ezra know he was denied prior to your comment posting?

Thanks,
Curious

I think my comment could have been written better. There is no juicy story here. Ezra and I have never met or even spoken to each other. He didn’t do anything wrong and he was never denied anything by us. A publicist approached me several times about doing a HearYa session with him a few years back. I took a listen and decided to move on. I didn’t bring it up again…end of story. He probably never even knew anything about it. I think the first line in my previous comment made it seem like there was some drama that took place…and for that I am sorry. Today was definitely one of those days where I was better off keeping my mouth shut.

I just really haven’t connected with his music. Doesn’t mean it’s bad…just means it’s not my thing. No harm there. The guy obviously has a fan in That Guy (who created this post). I’m sure there are many others out there who love Ezra’s music too.

Your comment first comment sounded like some sort of mysterious indictment of him or his music. It made me curious.
