The White Buffalo Prepare For Black and Blue [Album Review]

by oz on October 21, 2010

I love it when an artist’s name + album name combines to make an utterly ridiculous headline. According to Wikipedia, White Buffalo are extremely rare – they only occur in one out of every 10 million births.

The White Buffalo is Jake Smith residing in Southern California. We posted about him way back in 2007 and he’s been hard to track down until now. He’ll be releasing his second EP entitled Prepare For Black and Blue later this Fall.

The EP opens with “Love Song #2,” an acoustic sequel to “Love Song #1” from his 2005 self-titled EP. Didn’t take long to remember what I loved about The White Buffalo when first discovering the bearded singer-songwriter. It’s those husky vocals.

“Oh Darling” picks up the pace, burning with regret and violence in a spaghetti western. Then “Black and Blue” begins with lyrics:

Pack up your shit we’re through
Prepare for black and blue
She slams the door
Out into the night she flew
The neighbor yells shut the fuck up
It’s late and that’s quite enough
But I scan the streets and scream off the balcony for you

It’s that refreshing type of honest, heart-on-your-sleeve breakup song. “Into The Sun” fingerpicks you back up and features the best songwriting on the album. His voice has the ability to raise goosebumps when it deepens in the lines “until I hit the ocean.”

The White Buffalo is like mixing up Waylon Jennings, Warren Haynes, and Mark Lanegan into an old man drink.
