The Romany Rye fills a void left by Ryan Adams and The Cardinals. [Album Review]

the romany rye

The Romany Rye is a philosophical adventure novel written by George Barrows that follows the journey of a learned young man thrown in with a band of gypsies. It’s also the moniker used for singer/songwriter Luke MacMaster’s latest full-band project.‚  Their 8-song debut, Highway 1, Look Back Carefully, is a piece of breezy Americana that falls somewhere between the solo work of Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) and Ryan Adams and The Cardinals.

And speaking of Adams, if you’re in a bit of withdrawal from his musical sabbatical, then let The Romany Rye nurse you through the low times. Highway 1 will remind you of Ryan Adams’ alt-country exploits like Cold Roses and Jacksonville City Nights. It may only be eight tracks deep, but you won’t find a weak spot. “Long Way Down,” “Black Hair,” “All The Boys,” and the My Morning Jacket-inspired “Brother” are standouts.

These guys are refreshing. I am pumped for their show tonight at Metro. Add in some Delta Spirit and Ezra Furman and you have one fine night. Cheap ticket too! I will have plenty of pics if you guys want any of them just holler.
