Each year before posting our top albums of the year, we post albums we missed the previous year. It’s typically an embarrassing admission of indie music oversight and this year is no different. I’m ashamed to call myself a music blogger after looking at this list.
1. Henry Clay People – For Cheap Or For Free (Buy at Amazon for $7.99)
This is one that we honestly thought was on our list. It wasn’t until a couple of weeks after that we realized that we left it off. As always the lesson is, Oz and I are idiots.

2. Frightened Rabbit – The Midnight Organ Fight (Buy at Amazon for $8.99)
There is a tune on their first album called “Music Now” that turned me off this band. Upon a friend’s insistence, I checked out The Midnight Organ Fight and was floored. They killed it at Pitchfork and the two new tunes from the forthcoming album sound incredible as well.
Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper
3. The Walkmen – You & Me (Buy at Amazon for $5.99)
I was not enamored with their debut, but after catching them at the Pitchfork Festival, I downloaded this and a couple of other albums. Apparently they got much better. This album is amazing.
The Walkmen – On The Water (live via LaundroMatinee via MOKB)
4. Strand of Oaks – Leave Ruin (Buy at Amazon for $7.99)
Picked up on this one in early ‘09 and needless to say, we have been blown away by Tim Showalter’s moving debut.
Strand Of Oaks – End In Flames

5. The Gaslight Anthem – The 59 Sound (Buy at Amazon for $7.99)
Somewhat cheesy, but they channel enough Springsteen to overcome. There are worse guilty pleasures than this.
The Gaslight Anthem – The 59 Sound (acoustic on AP)
6. Little Joy – Little Joy (Buy at Amazon for $9.99)

The best of all The Strokes side projects. Sounds particularly good in Mexico the morning after drinking too much Don Julio.
Little Joy – No One’s Better Sake
7. The Pack A.D. – Funeral Mixtape (Buy at Amazon for $8.99)
Two female Canucks wailing the blues. I don’t know how this slipped by us.
The Pack A.D. – Making Gestures

The Pack A.D. are the real deal! Go see them live and say hello – they are great people and they ROCK!
I can’t believe i missed these too! Awesome post! Keep up the awesome work!
ha, i love this idea. i always have several from the year before that i just get around to late, and throw them in my list in their own section. you’ve got some great choices here — several that WERE on my top 10 list last year, which makes me quite inclined to listen to the ones on here that i’d never heard of….
thanks guys!
As an addendum to missed albums of 2008, may I add Thao and The Get Down Stay Down – Brave Bee Stings and All. If you haven’t seen Thao Nguyen live, she’s a firecracker…
