Girls – Album [Album Review]

As summer sadly comes to a close it’s hard not to take note of some great “summer albums” in 2009 including releases from Wilco, Foreign Born and the latest, Album from San Francisco-based, Girls.‚  Actually, Album will be released in later this month, which is arguably autumn and rather appropriate since this record undoubtedly has a summery feel with a dose of melancholy.

Founded on the songwriting of Christopher Owens, Girls recorded Album in a variety of bedrooms and rehearsal studios in their adopted hometown, San Francisco.‚  The territory covered on this album is expansive, but the underpinning is definitely pop that varies widely from track to track and more than casual traces of surf/punk tempos. The band uses the term ethereal in describing the music and I cannot think of a better or more appropriate adjective.

A few tracks worth noting, the first is the proclaimed opus of the album, “Hellhole Ratrace.”‚  The song is nearly 7 minutes of slight variations on the same chorus repeated numerous times.‚  It begins with a simple strum and Owens channeling early Elvis Costello, but opens up at the halfway point with a “wall-of-sound” element that reminds me some of the new Pink Mountaintops.

I don’t wanna cry, my whole life through
I wanna do some laughing (dancing) too
So c’mon, c’mon and laugh (dance) with me

That song will get the attention, and deservedly so, but my favorite is #8 or “Summertime.”‚  I can’t think of a better ode to the culmination of summer than this song with lyrical references to sleeping late, growing out your hair, napping in parks and soaking up the sunshine.‚  However, it’s the sense of longing for earlier summer days that emanates from a slightly melancholic melody”absolutely perfect for September.

Album is out September 22nd on a new label within the Matador family, True Panther Sounds.‚ ‚  The band has a modest California itinerary in September, but I would fully expect that it’s expanded significantly as this record takes root.‚  Nonetheless, look for them with stellar indie veteran Cass McCombs in SF and LA in mid September.

This is a great disc. Reminds me a bit of The Love Language at times.
