These United States – Live Session #54

by That Guy on August 31, 2009

these united states

If I had to choose one band to go on tour with, it would hands down be These United States. Over the course of the nearly 3 years that HearYa has been in existence, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot of great bands. These United States have that rare combination of incredible musicianship and personality that’s so hard to find in an industry filled with introspective types.

Both lead singer Jesse and drummer Robby had me and the rest of the HearYa crew rolling for the majority of their 4 song session, as evidenced by the purposefully-out-of-tune HearYa/Beer Nuts tag they recorded for us.

They rolled into Chi-town fresh off a gig in Indy, dealt with the traffic from Chicago’s Air and Water show, and made it to the studio just after 2:00. They were quite thirsty, so SafariMan and I headed to the nearest CVS for a case of Miller Lite and a twelver of Coors Light cold-activated bottles that were warm-inactivated. After a few swigs of beer, the guys were off and warming up.

Unfortunately, I’m ashamed to admit I hadn’t found the time to listen to their latest album prior to the band coming in. It didn’t take long for me to realize that these guys were the real deal and their latest, Everything Touches Everything, is easily one of the best albums of the year. It will be released tomorrow (9/1) and you should purchase it.

The guys played their hearts out for close to two hours, and by the end of the session they were drenched in sweat. We snapped a couple pics and they took off to Subterranean to open up for Lucero. Helluva set and just great guys. I walked away a huge fan – I guarantee you will too. Great session.

And as a side note, These United States beat music blogger, Dodge from MOKB/LaundroMatinee, at a game of pool during a stop in Indy and took his coveted trophy.‚  That same trophy is now touring with the band to celebrate said ass whooping.

IsAndAlwaysWasCDCover

Indie music cult hero, Daniel Johnston, is all set to release Is And Always Was on October 6th. Johnston collaborated with musician and producer, Jason Falker (Beck, Air, Paul McCartney), and stepped away from his trademark lo-fi recordings to create a proper studio album.

The first track released is “Freedom.”

Nurses – Apple’s Acre [Album Review]

by Starkey on August 28, 2009

nurses

I’m coming off of three days of rather mainstream music at Chicago’s Grant Park for Lollapalooza.‚  Despite the sweltering heat, it was and always seems to be, a rather enjoyable event with good music.‚  Regardless, it felt all good to put on something a little weird this week and it came courtesy of a solid new release from Nurses and their album Apple’s Acre on Dead Oceans.‚  I think the best way to describe this album is “quirky.” And in all aspects – from the vocals, to the arrangements, to the percussion, to the interesting little sound effects that sometimes bridge these tracks.‚  I have to believe that the Portland trio are big fans of Brian Wilson and the Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys.

Vocals are supplied largely by the expansive range of Aaron Chapman’s voice which on certain songs is better characterized as melodic chanting than actual singing.‚  There is ample vocal harmonizing, some of which is supplied through multiple tracks of just Chapman.‚  The percussion is also a little off-kilter and rarely provided by standard kits. Rhythm is certainly emphasized, however it comes from varied sources including finger snaps, handclaps, drum machines and some good ole fashioned guitar and tambourine slaps.‚  Speaking of guitars, it’s generally the acoustic variety and is woven in and out of these songs, sometimes the center of attention but often pared with the piano.‚  And no doubt, piano is the instrument of choice.‚  The best description of the piano on some of these songs is something like the old silent movie soundtracks ala Chaplin and Keaton”seriously.‚  But like a great collage, it all blends together quite nicely.

One of the more interesting songs on this record is “Big Ideas,” the sixth track.‚  What catches your attention is the pairing of drum machine percussion and a church organ that creates a dichotomy that is both grandiose and cheesy, but also damn good.‚  An organ is also prominent on “Lita,” only this time it emits a sound that is a perfect match for something you would hear at a funeral home.‚  And finally, there are those unique little sound effects that show up throughout these songs.‚  I would bet that there’s an entire track on “Orange Cymbals” that is recorded around the house using door hinges, floorboard creeks, etc.

Yeah, it’s weird but it’s really interesting and very good.‚  The band is beginning to garner some attention as Apple’s Acre was the most added song among college radio stations reporting to CMJ last week.‚  Oh, and even Stephen Malkmus has given his “thumbs up” to the band.‚  Nurses are going to be performing in Chicago tomorrow night, August 29, at Subterranean w/ Throw Me The Statue and The Brunettes.

HearYa Live Sessions: Lollapalooza 2009 Compilation! [Free Album]

August 27, 2009

When I looked at this year’s Lollapalooza lineup, it was special to see seven HearYa Live Session alumni on the roster. Two more (The Henry Clay People and The Low Anthem) stopped in for breakfast sessions during the fest. To celebrate this non-historic event, our live session producer Steve Shirk was nice enough to put [...]

Fanfarlo – The Walls Are Coming Down [New Video]

August 26, 2009

Fanfarlo sold their album for about a buck when it first released and it’s worth full price. I’ve been loving their Talking Heads inspired sound since 4th of July. They just released a video for “The Walls Are Coming Down” which features a guy strung up by his ankles in a straightjacket. Previously posted: Fanfarlo [...]

The Cave Singers – Welcome Joy [Album Review]

August 25, 2009

The Cave Singers ’07 debut, Invitation Songs, was a solid one indeed. Pete Quirk’s raspy vocals over acoustic guitars and simple percussion was easy to enjoy, but I felt that the album was the precursor to something better. It seemed to lack that sticky element that would give the album lasting quality – that attribute [...]
