These United States – Everything Touches Everything [Album Review]

by oz on July 21, 2009

I first wrote about These United States when reviewing their last album, Crimes. I said that listening to them is like meandering along the bourbon trail. You’ll taste some mainstream flavors, but you’ll also get lost along the way and sip on some home-distilled shit in some backwoods cabin. That description of the band still holds true thanks in large part to lead singer Jessie Elliot’s lazy, organic vocals. If Crimes was Jim Beam then Everything Touches Everything is akin to Woodford Reserve, offering a smoother finish. It’s one of the best albums of 2009.

The mp3 approved for posting is the first track on the album, “I Want You To Keep Everything.” Not a bad track, but the good stuff really kicks in on the next song, “Will It Ever,” with pedal steel, soaring guitars and nostalgic lyrics asking “Will it ever be this good again?” Two songs later you’ll find “Night And The Revolution,” a rocking page out of The Rolling Stones’ playbook, building with the lines “How do you think this night is gonna conclude?”

But where These United States shine is on “The Secret Door.” Elliot’s lyrics will give you chills while the band layers textures of piano, pedal steel and guitar into a palette of sound that blends to perfection. I’ll let you discover “The Secret Door” for yourself, in addition to one outstanding album. It’ll be out on September 1.

The first three tracks were my instant favorites, but now I’m obsessed with “I’m Gonna Assemble a City.”

I am enjoying this release alot more than Crimes. Crimes was enjoyable but didn’t real stick with me after it was done playing.
