Decemberists perform on Jay Leno. Why didn’t anyone tell me they were a psychedelic rock band?

by oz on May 15, 2009

I always thought of the Decemberists as a fanciful, lyrically wordy indie band without much rock and roll edge. I just watched their Leno performance from last night and…holy crap. They jam now! After watching them strut their stuff, I guess I’ll be buying their new album Hazards of Love after all.

And just who is this female vocalist that stole the stage from Colin Meloy?

This is me assuming that you’re not joking about who that is.
That’s Shara Worden from My Brightest Diamond/Sufjan Stevens.

Um…yeah… of course I was joking. I mean who hasn’t heard of Shara Worden? Seriously.

(looking up on wikipedia now)

What a remarkable three minutes of music that was.

Colin Meloy is sporting the Rod Blagojevich haircut with confidence.

I have said it before and I guess I’ll say it again, but they remind me of old Genesis. Not to mention that Chris Funk jams. How he lost to Colbert is still a mystery to me.

i have never liked the decemberists until this song came out. i do think that shara is the only reason i like it but that works too. her haircut was kind of weird but nothing compared to his.

LOL @ Guy, that’s hillarious!!!!

I’m just jealous of that Nord (well what looks to be a Nord at least).

WOAH. Why have I not been told to listen to them before? I feel like I’ve been missing out, living a sham! Do I really have friends? Sheesh.

That is Sara Watkins playing with the Decemberists. I think you guys are getting her mixed up with Shara Worden.
