Y’all have probably seen me link back to one of my favorite alt-country blogs, Nine Bullets, from time to time. I’m usually in agreement with his taste and commentary, until a couple weeks ago when he discussed The Gaslight Anthem and inferred that Fleet Foxes were undeserving of their praise. “Crap” is the word he used to describe their sound. NineBullets and HearYa will have to agree to disagree this time.
We’ve had a coming out party for people that don’t get Animal Collective, but are there Fleet Foxes non-believers out there? If so, I urge you to find their recent SNL performance of my favorite track “Mykonos.” Here’s the official video, but the live performance does the song much better justice. The harmonies are incredible.

I think they’re incredibly talented and agree their harmonies are pretty damn amazing. But, for some reason they don’t do it for me. I can’t really point my finger on why though. Kinda weird.
To call them overrated is pretty ridiculous though. It just doesn’t jive with my tastes I guess.
Really? You had to bring up the Animal Collective hate again?
How could you not like them? They have fantastic lyrics, a great sound, and lots of passion and emotion.
“Indie” has become such a tangeable product that I appreciate Animal Collective and Of Montreal for trancending that.
Were you of the flock that loved Hissing Fauna but didn’t “get” Skeletal Lamping, or did you pass off on Barnes as being pretentious?
And Fleet Foxes IS overrated.
Whoa, whoa. I never used the word “hate.” I said I don’t get them. Of Montreal is definitely another band I don’t get.
To be honest, I had to look up Hissing Fauna to see what you were talking about which shows the lack of time I’ve spent with their music. Just not my thing, that’s all.
I suppose there is a difference between “hating on something” and “a coming out party for people that don’t get Animal Collective. ”
I’ve enjoyed this blog, so hearing you not “get” AC or Of Montreal was like hearing my girlfriend talk about my best friend.
And to be fair, Mykonos is pretty good.
Well then, I’ll dedicate some spare hours to dive headfirst into AC and OM. The world’s balance has been restored. Carry on.
While I recognize the skill at what Fleet Foxes do, I cannot get into them. This is most likely because, as someone who’s never been out of a major world city for an extended period of my life, I am generally nervous and often petrified of being alone in the woods, which seems to be a big part of Fleet Foxes’ appeal. It’s probably why, in the wake of the Fleet Foxes, one of my favorite songs of the 2008 was “Green Jean Jamboree” by Nethers—which didn’t reach the same heights as I imagine a Fleet Foxes song must reach for Pacific Northwesterners, but captured the simultaneous fascination and neurosis city dwellers have towards nature better than few other songs I’ve ever heard.
For the record, I just listened to this track again and I would urge everyone to make it to the 2 min 13 second mark when they change tempo and the entire band harmonizes. Even if you’re not into Fleet Foxes, you’ve got to admit. That’s fucking cool.

The fleet foxes overrated? Are you fucking kidding me? That album is absolutely innovative and incredible. Their harmonies are unmatched and if you don’t get a chill down your spine listening to Mykonos, then you should probably put on the new Miley Cyrus single and listen to that instead and maybe you will be inspired. I also happen to love the new Of Montreal as well as the older albums, and even though I didnt really connect with the older Animal Collective, im totally into the subtle poppiness of Merriwether Post Pavillion and finally enjoy them.
nah……i think the word innovation doesnt fit these guys…..they are pretty cool & amazing as a live band……english house is totally awesome too…..but i always thought that the fleet foxes kinda ripped off the sound of an early my morning jacket…except that they opted to do all the harmonizing stuff on these albums….think of my morning jacket’s “it still moves” but with harmonizing vocals on it….
