kinch

Kinch hail from Phoenix and they released 3 song EP entitled The Economic Chastisement sometime this year. If you can listen to the title track below just once and stop, I applaud you. It’s catchy as hell.

You can download the three-track EP, for free on their site and they’ll be playing some shows in Austin at SXSW.

Kinch – The Economic Chastisement

{ 3 comments }

We weren’t originally planning to host a party at SxSW 2009, but as fate would have it, we’re now collaborating with Tom Schraeder and QuinnStorm.com to throw one helluva a shindig. The economic crisis is stealing a lot of our thunder, but we’re kick-starting the festival with a Stimulus Package of our own. In true near-Depression fashion, the event is free and open to the public.

There will be DJ’s spinning in between sets to avoid the awkward silence during set changes and rumor has it that there will even be a singer/songwriter performing in the restroom area.

Other perks? How about lots of free shit, including delicious ice-cold beer (the Rolling Rock flavor).

And the lineup kind of speaks for itself:

11am Danny Malone
Noon Ferraby Lionheart
1pm The Henry Clay People
2pm The Deep Dark Woods
3pm Joe Pug
4pm Tom Schraeder
5pm Justin Townes Earle
6pm Motel Motel
7pm Gringo Star
8pm Tigercity
9pm Morning Benders
10pm BLK JKS
11pm Harlem Shakes
12am Red Cortez
1am Tallest Man On Earth

The rest of the details:

Stimulus Package
hosted by HearYa.com and QuinnStorm.com

The Paradise
401 E. 6th St.
Wednesday, 11am – 2am. That’s a doosey.

Warning: It’s a small venue, so get there early and set up shop.

We’re a bit late to the game in finalizing the lineup, so do us a favor and tell all your SXSW friends. It’ll be a nice time.

Here’s what it’ll sound like:

Danny Malone – In The Darkness (from the HearYa Live Session)

Ferraby Lionheart – Corrine

The Henry Clay People – Something In The Water

The Deep Dark Woods – All The Money I Had Is Gone

Joe Pug – Hymn 101

Tom Schraeder – Needle Will Bite

Justin Townes Earle – Mama’s Eyes

Motel Motel – Coffee

Gringo Star – All Y’all

Tigercity – Are You Sensation

The Morning Benders – Damnit Anna (from the HearYa Live Session)

BLK JKS – Lakeside

The Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game

Red Cortez – All The Difference

Tallest Man On Earth – I Won’t Be Found

Bishop Allen – Grrr [Album Review, SXSW 2009]

by Woody on February 26, 2009

There are many nights when a dance party emerges in my kitchen after chicken nuggets and peas. My two year old twins and my 4.5 year old have been known to get down to the Joos, The White Stripes and very recently we had a stunning performance to Crooked Rain.

One disc that always seemed to find its way into mix was Bishop Allen’s The Broken String. Listening to that album just always seems to put a smile on my face. The indie pop displayed on The Broken String was so refreshing that I just never grew tired of it like so many of their contemporaries. Well Bishop Allen’s latest release Grrr… is all that and a bag a chips. Songwriters Justin Rice & Christian Rudder have once again crafted a delightful collection of 13 tunes full of clever lyrics, unique arrangements and top notch production. Chances are taken throughout the disc and Bishop Allen steps up to meet the challenge at every turn.

Tough to pick a favorite on Grrr… as it seems to change on every listen. At first it was “Oklahoma,” an upbeat ditty that makes me want to bounce around the house. Next up is “The Ancient Commonsense of Things” that combines the best lyrics on the disc as well some stunning xylophone work . Currently “The Lion & The Teacup” is the leader in the clubhouse. It has the same Latin flavor that “Castanets” had on The Broken String.

Some people go head over heels for bands that are genre-bending and defining new types of music. But give me a band that consistently writes near-perfect pop tunes any day of the week. Bishop Allen are writing some of the best tunes out there today. Songs that stay with you. Songs that become a part of you.

Joe Pug has been spending quite a bit of time in the studio with HearYa Live Session producer, Steve Shirk, recording some new material. For those of you that loved Joe’s debut Nation of Heat EP (it was our top EP of 2008), here’s a taste of what you have to look forward to. The track performed with Billboard entitled “Unsophisticated Heart” is actually more sophisticated and sincere in its vocal delivery.

Check out the interview and you’ll hear Joe talk about life without a label and he even name drops our boy Shirk.‚  I’m really looking forward to catching him for the first time at SxSW.

So yeah…We’ve got this SxSW party and it’s on Wednesday from 11am until 2am in the morn and Joe Pug will be there. More details to come.

Okay, here’s one more detail. Justin Townes Earle is also playing.

The Avett Brothers, Tedd Leo, Gaslight Anthem cover Bruce Springsteen

February 25, 2009

Bruce Springsteen’s latest album Working On A Dream is unspectacular to say the least, but he and The E Street Band sure do some cool marketing and PR. They’ve got a page on their site called Hangin’ On E Street that features other artists covering their stuff. The Avett Brothers – Glory Days Gaslight Anthem [...]

Blitzen Trapper @ The Empty Bottle, Chicago [Concert Review]

February 23, 2009

In May of 2004, the English Football team that I support, Arsenal, put on a tour de force that was simply magical to watch. They defeated another top team, Everton by the scoreline of 7-0. They were led by one of my favorite players on all time, Dennis Bergkamp, as he pulled the strings on [...]

HearYa Live Session 40: Those Darlins

February 23, 2009

Some time ago, I received an email about a group of gals from Murfreesboro that had opened up for O’Death and would be on Dan Auerbach’s tour. As you could imagine, my interest was piqued and after checking them out on YouTube,‚  I was immediately won over by the threesome’s sass. They hit the stage [...]
