Folk music pioneer and civil rights activist, Odetta, died yesterday of heart disease at the age of 77. She influenced artists like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, but considered herself a music historian and not a folk singer. Her bluesy songs of slavery, poverty, and hope were meant to educate and preach her personal gospel.
