We first posted about Gringo Star back in April after the band sent us the catchy as hell track “All Y’all.” The band mentioned that they were unsigned, so I shot off an email to Patrick at Alive Records who immediately responded saying “They’ve got a nice Ray Davies vibe.” Damn, he was spot on.
Despite their “British invasion” sound, Gringo Star actually hail from Atlanta and are set to release their debut full length album on November 4th. A few of the standout tracks (in addition to the tracks below) include my personal favorite, “Transmission,” and then a long list that includes “Eve of Your Expression,” “Holding On To Hate,” and “Take A Walk,” which had my five month old daughter kicking and laughing in her bouncy seat. It’s the first song I’ve seen have such an impact. She even squirted out a little joy poop for good measure.
Some of their songs have the pop sensibilities of The Morning Benders, but Gringo Star adds a bit more edge and attitude. If these guys are still unsigned, then some record labels made an egregious error.‚ A year from now, however, staying independent may just be the best thing that’s happened to Gringo Star. They’ll win over a large audience in 2009.
The band is on tour for select dates in the States before taking their act to the UK. They’ll be at The Beat Kitchen in Chicago tomorrow night after a quick stop in our studio for a live session. All y’all should get there.
Sorry. I couldn’t help myself.
