Megafaun – Bury The Square, SXSW 2008

by Woody on March 7, 2008

I first heard “Lazy Suicide” by Megafaun and was immediately hooked. The song slowly builds with wonderful harmonies ala The Avett Brothers with just a hint of the sound that makes me love O’Death so much. The song slowly descends into a bizarre little jam full of unique instrumentation before easing back into the harmonies that hooked you in the first place. After listening to “Lazy Suicide” on repeat for a couple of days, I downloaded Bury The Square the morning it came out. I was eager to see what else was in store.

The rest of the disc is phenomenal and the 11 minute “Where You Belong” really sticks in my head. Beginning with the three boys harmonizing over some subtle banjo playing and strings, the song takes its time slowly dissolving into a feedback-laden finish that reminds me of Wilco.

Apparently they were in a band with recent blog hero, Bon Iver. I liked the Bon Iver release but I have to say, I wasn’t completely bowled over. Megafaun’s unique instrumentation and beautiful harmonies have managed to completely win me over.

They are going to be all over Austin for SXSW so I suggest making every effort to track them down.
