Say Hi – The Wishes and The Glitch, SXSW 2008

Say HI

I was raised listening to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. For some reason, I went through an odd phase in high school where I listened to 80’s music. It’s pretty much all I listened to for the entire year of 1992 (other than that Seattle grunge stuff) while living in Hood River, Oregon. If you looked through my cd’s back then, you’d find U2, The Cure, Simple Minds, and The Psychedelic Furs. It’s the love affair with these bands that has me hooked on Say Hi’s newest release, The Wishes and The Glitch.

I know HearYa is a little heavy on music with twang, but Say Hi scratches another itch. To compare it with 80’s music isn’t an insult. Say Hi’s sound is layered with keyboards and synth backings and Eric Elbogen’s wavering vocals could be compared with Robert Smith (but with a happier disposition). They offered up three free tracks, but the album has much more to offer. Other standout tracks include “Back Before We Were Brittle” and “Bluetime.”

If you’re a fan of the Shout Out Louds or any music with hand claps (like I am), then this is a band you should listen to. Catch them at SXSW 2008 – The schedule follows the MP3’s:

Say Hi – Northwestern Girls

Say Hi – Toil and Trouble

Say Hi – Zero to Love
