Delta Spirit – Ode to Sunshine

Delta Spirit

I am a busy man. I own my own business, have three kids, a dog and then I moonlight as a writer on As a result, I sometimes fall very far behind on some of the other websites/blogs that I really enjoy. So one night in December while my wife was at a Christmas party I decided to go back through the ’07 Daytrotter archives to see what I missed.

I was puttering around when I noticed the band Delta Spirit. The write-up sucked me in, so I scrolled down to see what cover tune Delta Spirit may have played (Side note: The National’s “Pretty In Pink” on Daytrotter could be one of my favorite covers of all time). Delta Spirit performed Paul Simon’s “Duncan” and knocked it out of the park. I consider myself to be a fairly big Paul Simon fan and this is his most underrated tune.

I gobbled up the four tracks off of Daytrotter and loved each and every one of them. The next day I downloaded their album, Ode To Sunshine, and I think I have listened to it every day since, including three times in a row after making the purchase.

Ode To Sunshine is a 40 minute soulful, rock and roll experience that fits in just perfectly with other HearYa favorites like Parson Redheads and Dr. Dog. A couple of my favorite tracks include “Trashcan” which has a fantastic piano hook and the slow meandering “House Built For Two” which sounds almost Beatlesque. If you like proper rock and roll that is full of heart, soul, and feeling then I would suggest making this purchase a priority. My only regret is that I discovered them a week too late for our top 50 of ’07. They would have been in my top 15 or 20 for sure.

Probably the best album I’ve downloaded this year. I agree on Duncan also. They do an amazing job w/ that track.

I discovered Delta Spirit when I saw them open for Cold War Kids… I was left speechless, the energy of their live performance is a very rare thing. They did their best to re-create it on their second album (Ode to sunchine), the result is as good as it could be, but still far from the live show. I must say that you will fall in love with the song “Children” once you will see it live!!
