Athens, GA is smiling today. DBT and The Whigs gave birth.

Athens, GA should be smiling like a proud daddy. Two of it’s finest bands have released albums today.

The Whigs

I first saw the Whigs at SXSW last year in what might have been the warmest bar I’ve ever set foot in (and I’ve been on several Spring Breaks in Cancun). After one full day of drinking in Austin, the last thing I needed was a steaming hot bar stocked with men to soothe my hangover on day two. I remember bumping into some dude on the way to the bathroom and our elbows stuck together, adhered by what I’m sure was a combination of sweat, booze and undigested Tex-Mex grease that was oozing out of our pores.

Shortly after that awkward, sickening encounter, The Whigs took the stage and Parker Gispert started howling into the microphone. The elbow grease was the least of my hangover concerns now. The Whigs play loudly. I started looking around for something to stuff in my ears, but could only find cigarette butts on the beer-soaked floor. Not quite that desperate to fend off the onslaught inside my head, I grabbed a Lonestar and enjoyed the show. These guys are good and I can’t wait to dive into the album.

For you Chicago readers, they’ll be at Schubas on Feb 9th w/ Tulsa. They will also be in Austin again for SXSW 2008.

DBT

I’m going to see the Drive-By Truckers with The Felice Brothers on Feb 13th at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. Patterson Hood said that Brighter than Creations Dark is “a grower” and warned fans that it’ll take a while to sink in. That’s exactly what happened with the following track, “Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife.” It didn’t grab me right away, but I find my self listening to it repeatedly now. I’ll be spending some quality time with the album tonight.

I felt like a kid on Christmas morning. I was so excited to wake up and download the DBT album. I have listened to it twice already and I am loving it.

Here in Athens we are very proud of our scene and it’s great to see two of our favorite local acts recognized!
