Anytime I get a CD that has a love song devoted to a spirit, I immediately take a liking to said band. The Devil Makes Three will touch your heart with their ode to Jack Daniels, “Old Number Seven.” Its not a boastful tune about how much they drink, but more of a thank you for helping out in the lean times. Kinda like a good friend.
To be honest, by the time that track had made its way through my headphones I was already a fan of this Pacific Northwest threesome that comes at you with a couple of guitars and a stand-up bass. Devil Makes Three constructs their tunes with no percussion, but you barely even notice because there’s plenty of rhythm to satisfy everyone.
The overall sound is alt-country without the twang and a hint of punk attitude. Pete Berhnard & Cooper McBean can certainly pick it and Lucia Turino slaps that bass like it made a rude pass at her. In addition to their fawning over Tennessee’s finest, a couple of my other favorites include “Graveyard,” “The Bullet,” and “Dynamite.” The self-titled album is actually their debut, but it was remastered and then re-released in November. This version includes some b-sides and live recordings.
Last year at SXSW, we caught The Morning Pages on an outdoor patio as the sun was setting. I grabbed myself a Mt. Gay & Tonic and just eased into the night. That was one of the highlights of my 3 days in Austin. I really hope to find myself in the same setting with these guys sometime, except this time I’ll have Old Number Seven filling my mug.

Reminds me of Four Year Bender. A good thing, of course.
