The Wire – Cole’s Wake, The Pogues “Sally Maclennane”

by oz on December 29, 2007

There isn’t a better show on TV than The Wire on HBO. It’s returning on January 6th, so I spent most of December watching past seasons and ran across this superb and touching scene called “Cole’s Wake” about Baltimore cops sending off a fallen comrade. The scene features the song “Sally Maclennane” by the Pogues.

If you have HBO and have been skipping The Wire, stop it. It’s all about the Baltimore drug scene, cops, dealers, murder, and corrupt politicians. What else do you need?

Here’s more about the scene:

At Kavanagh’s Irish Pub, friends and fellow cops of the late Ray Cole gather to uphold a Baltimore police tradition: a final drink with their deceased friend. (Cole was played by the show’s late executive producer Robert F. Colesberry and the character’s wake was in part a tribute to the actor who portrayed him.

Actually, the song used on The Wire is “The Death of an American”. The Pogues simply used the same tune as “Sally Maclennane”.

The real real name of the piece is “The Body of an American”
