Christmas is for drunks and whores too!

bad santa

I’m heading out to Kansas City to visit the family for the holidays, so HearYa may be on hiatus until next Wednesday-ish. If you’re out caroling this holiday season, here are a couple of unconventional songs you should throw in the mix alongside the fa-la-la-la-la’s and pa-rump-a-pum-pum’s. You may need to stagger up to your neighbor’s front stoop wearing pee-stained santa pants, a wife-beater and a bottle of Jameson’s in one hand to pull them off, but it’ll be well worth the effort.

The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” is one of my favorite songs of all time (let’s remember Kristy MacColl – tragic story) with the classic start, “It was Christmas eve babe, in the drunk tank.” And Tom Waits has a gift for painting a delusional, depressing holiday scene through a the eyes of an ex-junky prostitute in the haze of barroom smoke and a short glass of whiskey.

Happy holidays everyone! You’ll find some cover tunes below and I highly recommend the Scotland Yard Gospel Choir track. They did a really great job.
If you were reading last Christmas, you know that I posted the same Pogues video. It looks like the start of a tradition.
