I owe the 1900’s an apology. I almost didn’t give them a chance because my first glance at the band name had me thinking it was a new release by an underwhelming band called the 1990s. Overlooking Cold and Kind would have been a huge mistake. This chamber-pop septet delivers a wonderful debut album on Parasol Records and you’ll see it again soon on our list of best albums of the year.
The 1900s have a sound that feels inspired from 60’s and 70’s influences such as Velvet Underground, Zombies and Fleetwood Mac. Cold and Kind never jumps out and demands that you take notice. It sort of just saddles up to you and fills you with positive vibes. It’s such a pleasing album to listen to, much like Midlake’s The Trials of Van Occupanther.
The boy/girl harmonies are stunning throughout the entire length of the album and, on the occasion when the two lead female singers harmonize such as “When I Say Go,” you are truly in for a treat. It’s bands like this that make me proud to be a Chicagoan.
