Song Pairings: Augie March’s “One Crowded Hour” and Straight Gin
2 Comments Published by Drinking Buddy November 30th, 2007 in Music Musings.Hi. I’m Drinking Buddy. I don’t encourage drinking among minors nor those with chronic heart disease or herpes, but sometimes I talk about drinking in my posts. One thing I don’t typically drink is wine, but apparently there’s this thing called “wine pairings” where a snooty waiter tricks you into buying the most expensive bottle […]

HearYa Live Session 10: Dusty Rhodes and the River Band
5 Comments Published by Woody November 27th, 2007 in HearYa Sessions.Last week I received an e-mail from Shirk wondering if I could attend a session by Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. I owe the 1900’s an apology. I almost didn’t give them a chance because my first glance at the band name had me thinking it was a new release by an underwhelming band called the 1990s. Overlooking Cold and Kind would have been a huge mistake. This chamber-pop septet delivers a wonderful debut album on Parasol Records and you’ll see it again soon on our list of best albums of the year.
The 1900s have a sound that feels inspired from 60’s and 70’s influences such as Velvet Underground, Zombies and Fleetwood Mac. Cold and Kind never jumps out and demands that you take notice. It sort of just saddles up to you and fills you with positive vibes. It’s such a pleasing album to listen to, much like Midlake’s The Trials of Van Occupanther.
The boy/girl harmonies are stunning throughout the entire length of the album and, on the occasion when the two lead female singers harmonize such as “When I Say Go,” you are truly in for a treat. It’s bands like this that make me proud to be a Chicagoan.
