One Track At a Time – Go Cubs Go!

by Woody on October 3, 2007

Can You See The Sunset From The South Side, another great blog here in Chicago, beat us to it. But thats OK, we’ll put it up anyway. Despite their apparent failings in geography, they have posted the greatest song ever in the history of time. Steve Goodman’s “Go Cubs Go” is having a bit of revival this year as the Cubs have won their first Division Championship since 2003. The song is piped through the PA system at Wrigley Field after every Cubs home victory, something that has happened 44 times this year, so far.

Writer Steve Goodman, a local folk singer, wrote the song at the bequest of the team and WGN in 1984. Unfortunately he died of lukemia just 4 days before the Cubs would clinch the divison. Fortunately, he didn’t have see the epic collapse in that postseason that year either.

It may not be the coolest or the best song, but it’s got a lot of heart. And as a North Sider in this amazing city, nothing would make me happier than a Pennant and a World Series banner hanging from the rafters at Wrigley Field.

Nothing better than be piss-drunk after a game and singing this song.

God I miss Wrigley. I’m sure I’ll catch some of the playoff joy from my local Chili’s out here in suburbia.

Good to see your referencing “Go, Cubs, Go” and “A Dying Cub Fan’s Last Request” by Steve Goodman. He often doesn’t get his due. You might be interested in an eight-year project of mine that has come to fruition — an 800-page biography of Goodman published in May, “Steve Goodman: Facing the Music.” Please check my Internet site below for more info on the book. Just trying to spread the word. Feel free to do the same!
