So I realized I’ve done two articles about hip-hip/rap and not given either of them a full endorsement. In no way do I want this to reflect on my feelings of the genre as a whole. There are amazing MCs and producers out there and I try to listen to it as often as possible.
Black Star, otherwise known as Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and DJ Hi Tek released their only album back in August of 1998. The album is full of culturally relevant and empowering raps backed by amazing beats and some of the best flows I’ve heard. When released, as a freshman in high school in Iowa, I really couldn’t fully understand the fullness of this record. I can still say that it is easily one of my favorite records ever.
So here is “Definition,” whose chorus is
“I said one two three
It’s kind of dangerous to be a emcee
They shot Tupac and Biggie
Too much violence in hip-hop”

An absolute tremendous album which ironically enough I just threw out last night due to all the water in my basement. Thankfully it will last on my Ipod.
