Shayna and The Bulldog – Firecracker In Winter

Shayna and the Bulldog

I recently had the pleasure of having the Shayna & The Bulldog’s debut EP, Firecracker In Winter, show up at my door. The disc started off innocently enough with some fantastic finger picking twang on the alt-country tune “Before We Wake.” I was digging it and it was digging me.
Then all of a sudden it sounded like a whole new band emerged, and in addition to the new sound, I was pleasantly greeted by a lyrical masterpiece that hailed the superhuman qualities of legendary thespian, Paul Walker. I have to admit that I didn’t know that Paul’s whole career could be broken down in a three minute indie song, but low and behold. It can.

The rest of the EP bounced back and before between catchy alt-country and indie pop. The pattern continued up until the last tune, “Hard Thoughts and Hard Liquor” which, in spite of its lack of movie star references, was probably the highlight of the disc for me. Aptly enough the song begins with signature instrument of hard times, the harmonica, and leisurely progresses along with the accompaniment of the piano and pedal steel. It’s the perfect end to a quality debut album; a track that every man can identify with.

Hey there, if you’re interested in buying their album (and hearing some more of their songs…all fantastic by the way) you should check them out at http://www.myspace.com/shaynaandthebulldog. I bought my copy of the cd at one of their shows but I know others who have bought it online. If you’re in the Davis, CA area check out their shows, there as good (if not better) live!
