Dappled Cities – Granddance

Dappled Cities

As I flipped through the liner notes before my spin of Dappled Cities’ Granddance, I read a few of the song lyrics and found myself wondering how this complex string of words could be structured into songs. The lyrics read like poems and are carefully interwoven into the fabric of the music. Maybe I just haven’t read liner notes in years and I forgot the written word actually becomes a song.

The first track from Granddance, “Holy Chord”, starts off with ticking alarm clocks, a kick drum, hand claps and quirky vocals until halfway through the song when guitar kicks in and the quicker tempo that you’ve been waiting for. From there, this Australian band will take you on a creative journey from one song to the next.

Granddance is a wonderful album that fans of the Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse will be drawn to. It’s full of character, wit, 80’s influences, anthem-choruses, jangly guitars, and keyboards. It’s complex, diverse indie-pop and it deserves to be heard several times before it can be understood and appreciated.

I don’t care for either Modest Mouse or The Arcade Fire but I still dig these guys a bit. Definitely a unique sound and I only like listening to them when I can give my full attention to it.
