Gore Gore Girls - Beat Kitchen, 7/14/06

I headed out last Saturday to catch The Gore Gore Girls at The Beat Kitchen in Chicago. After seeing the last few shows solo, I persuaded my buddy Jefe to come out with me and we were fortunate to catch two high-energy sets at one small venue.
First, we were greeted by The Muldoons from Detroit. The three-piece outfit consists of Brian on drums and his two kids, Shane (vox/guitar) and Hunter (guitar/vox). Shane is 10 and Hunter is 13. As they were warming up, Jefe turned to me and remarked that is was cool that the dad let his kids come up and tune up their guitars. Little did we know that they were the band. These boys were more than a sideshow, however, and put on a great performance. Shane throws himself around the stage like a pre-pubescent Iggy Pop and Hunter was doing some great shit on the guitar.
Soon the Gore Gore Girls hit the stage, resplendent in all their patent leather and vinyl. They started off strong with “Fox In A Box” and “Pleasure Unit.” The crowd was definitely digging the performance, which was taken up a notch by the introduction of The Gorettes, three of the Gore Gore Girls’ friends from Detroit who hit the stage in black dresses, gloves and heels. The Gorettes added backing vocals to The Girls’ great harmonizing and some choreography reminiscent of girl pop acts of the 60s’.
They tore through the rest of their set mostly playing from their Bloodshot debut, Get the Gore. Amy Gore, the lead singer of the band was fantastic. I don’t mean to single her out, but her live performance is shockingly good. She has an almost maniacal stare and the intensity of her delivery really amps up the crowd.
