There is a fine line between being mean and being mean with a wink. Often times, the words used are exactly the same and only the tone or presentation differs. The even more difficult part about, the now unfortunately defunct, Pedro the Lion is that they do both so well. David Bazan’s lyrics have always been in the forefront of his music and covered topics from marriage, infidelity, and politics. However, it was his tone and usage of lyrics within the music subtly that make Pedro the Lion stand out among others.
“When They Really Get To Know You They Will Run”, at face value, is Bazan complaining about woman’s leg hair. “I don’t like girls the way they are / so shave their legs / and make them look like movie stars.” However the feel of the song gives the impression that Bazan is complaining about the cultural phenomenon of women shaving their legs and that “it’s natural.” The song begins with an amazing sliding acoustic chord progression. The verses are fairly straightforward with a staccato rhythm until the chorus returns with the original slid progression. While it’s certainly different from the other songs off Pedro The Lion’s first disc, “It’s Hard to Find a Friend,” it’s definitely not one to skip.
